#298 UNKNOWN TOYMAKER – DIE-CAST SPACESHIPS (Around 1981)

I have had these spaceships for more than 15 years now. I found them on a flea market in Spain and despite having no inscription on the lower part of the body, I bought them.

I guessed they had to be already quite old, since they were beautifully casted and very heavy: they’re 100% metal, without a single plastic part. At first sight, I could notice it was not one of those Chinese cheap “die-cast” toys that had arrived only a few years earlier to “100 pesetas” shop (the Spanish equivalent to modern 1 Euro or 99p stores), and that were already quite common even in flea markets.

I can’t remember how much did I pay for them or any other detail about that purchase. Recently I saw them in a box again, and thought they would make a nice blog entry, if I could find who made them, when, or any other information.

I’ve been making some research on them, and it’s a hard work. First I concluded they’re surely made in Spain. 15 years ago, almost nobody had internet at home, so it is unlikely that they were purchased abroad.

They could be, of course, imported, but comparing them with similar foreign toys (Zylmex for example), I noticed some differences, especially on the wheels. Any other major company like Corgi or Matchbox is automatically discarded, because they mark all their products.

Another hint comes from the fact, that I found no pictures of these vehicles anywhere on the internet, except in todocoleccion.net, which, if you don’t know it yet, it’s something like the “Spanish eBay”. A seller had three spaceships and sold them for 6 Euros each a while ago. So, the country of origin of these spaceships is Spain.

I asked Woodsy from Moonbase Central to identify the spaceships for me, and he returned me the following picture:

-Orange model is based on the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane from the U.S. Airforce (1964).
-Blue model is based on Buck Roger’s Starfighter (TV-Series 1979, although the character was created in 1932).
-Yellow model is based on Gerry Anderson’s Captain Scarlet’s Angel Interceptor (1967).
-Grey model is based on Battlestar Galactica’s Colonial Viper (1978).

Grey model picture was taken from todocoleccion, this model does not belong to my collection.

Spanish toy manufacturers that made planes are at least 3: Mira, Pilen and PlayMe. The first two were based in Ibi (Alicante) and the third one in Beniparrell (Valencia).

They also marked their toys with almost no exception. Mira for example left its “ship”series unmarked. The reason this time could be that the manufacturing company wanted to avoid any legal problem for “copying” models from those films and tv-shows, but this is only a guess.

I have remarked that the wheels used in the spaceships are virtually undistinguishable from those in Pilen or PlayMe models. I have checked some catalogues from these companies, but I found nothing about the space-series among planes. Maybe they were manufactured by another company.

An interesting thing to mention before the article comes to an end, is that the spaceships are decorated with stickers: One of them is the British flag, another is the (British) Royal Air Force insignia and in the third model, the star from the U.S. Air Force as well as some decorative stickers. These stickers are made of paper, not plastic. Similar stickers were used by Mira in their later models but not by Playme or Pilen, that used decals.

I don’t know which models other than these 4 were ever made, or in which kind of box were they sold, so I cannot really tell much more about them. I have also contacted other toy experts in Spain, but I got no definitive answer yet. If I get some information I’ll update this entry. If you have some information, please write me. You’ll find my email in the upper right part of this page. Thanks!

UPDATE:

These are three more sapceships I found after the article was written and published. I finally have the Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica, the Cylon Rider, also from Battlestar Galactica and a second Buck Roger's Starfighter.

#297 PAPEL Y PLÁSTICO 2 (OSCAR LOMBANA)

I got this book after a friend recommended it to me. I had seen pictures of it on the internet, and I thought I wouldn’t learn anything from it, since it doesn’t have much text.

I think the goal of the book was not to inform but to entertain and bring back memories, and it does it pretty well. I laugh a lot reading some of the comments. Mostly, they do not have any relation to what’s been depicted, but are just an idea, a remark or a thought that kids had back in the 80s. I guess the author was born sometime by the mid-70s, and is therefore a couple of years older than me, but I can also remember almost everything he mentions.

I normally prefer books with lots of data on them, but this time, it was a pleasure to read “Papel y Plástico 2” for a good time. There are also “Papel y Plástico” and “Papel y Plástico 3”, I am looking to find them and read them.

The book’s layout is amazing, one of the best layout works I have seen lately. The pages imitate those of a schoolboy’s notebook, with many pictures and some comments to those pictures. The images are big and reveal many details of the toys, magazines, pictures, promotional objects, you won’t need a magnifying glass to see the details, as it often happens in other books. See pictures below.

The book can be found on many bookstores across Spain, as well as lacasadellibro.com, fnac, amazon or any other big online bookstore.

And to finish this article, a few sample pages. The will help you make yourself an idea of what's inside.

#296 YATMING – ADAMS PROBE 16 (1005), FORD THUNDERBIRD (1008), VOLKSWAGEN (1009) and MERCEDES-BENZ 450 SEL (1012) (around 1970)

Yat Ming or Yatming is a die-cast manufacturer from Hong Kong. Its founder is Mr. Wai Ming Lam, whose middle-name gave name to the company. Although it has been traditionally written “Yatming”, now we know that the correct form to write it is “Yat Ming”, that in Chinese mean “The best of Ming”.

The company was founded in 1970, and produced 1:64 scale cars, by the mid 90s, they changed their vision, and started producing higher quality scale models, plenty of details in higher scales, like 1:43, 1:24 and 1:18. This second part of the history of Yat Ming is not interesting for this blog, that focuses on toys made before the mid 90s.

Today, I will present a few Yat Ming models I have bought during the last 20 years. They’re just a few, because they’re pretty rare in Europe. I currently own 16 different models.

The history of Yat Ming, is quite similar to the history of Zylmex, that was told in entry #193. Yat Ming produced cheap die-cast cars that could only compete with Matchbox, Majorette and others due to their low price.

Yatming models were sold in packages under the names: “Fastwheel”, “Real Wheels”, “Speeding Wheels”, “Road Toughs” and “Street Machines”. Yatming models, as it was the case of Zylmex, produced models for supermarket chains and retailers like F.W. Woolworth, but these were sold with a different numbering system.

To finish this article, I’ll leave a list of Yat Ming references for future use (I’ll use it as a checklist).

LIST OF PRODUCED MODELS (original by Doug Breithaupt, Mark Forster and others, list retrieved from die-castchile.blogspot.com)

1000-SERIES: This is the standard series by Yatming, the one with the most models. All models in this range have a metal body, but the chassis might be made of plastic or metal, depending on each reference. Plastic chassis might be black or chromed. Some references are double, that is, two different cars might have the same reference number. And within the same reference number and models, there exist colour and wheel variations.

In this series, we can establish some subseries, although I think it is best to check the names, because some of these sub-groups are really heterogeneous.

#295 YOLANDA – TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (1991)

No way! 295 entries and not a single TMNT yet? I’m really sorry. I have a couple of Playmates’ figures but none of them is complete, so I am waiting until I find the missing accessories to show the figures here, in a proper entry.

Meanwhile, I’ll show these other ninja turtles, which are also very nice toys, and have many things we could comment right now.

We already talked about Yolanda/Comansi in other entries. As said in those entries, Yolanda used to buy licenses to reproduce children’s favourite characters in plastic PVC figures. Since the TMNT was the most important toy collection by the beginning of the 90s, it was just a matter of time for Yolanda to get those licenses. The figures in the pictures are all copyrighted by “Mirage Studios”, the comic book company founded by Eastman and Laird (the creators of the characters).

Although the copyright of the figures is from 1988, I guess these figures were first sold in shops around 1991, maybe 1992.

As the Saint Seiya figures were (I showed in entry #174), these are hand painted, so the colours of the turtles might be mistaken. In this case is not the color, but the cast… can you find the error?

In the picture with all four turtles, left to right, we see:
Raphael (red), Leonardo (blue), Donatello (purple) and Michelangelo (orange), the letter in their belts tells the initial of the name, so every character is correctly painted.

However, it would have been more appropriate to cast each turtle with its preferred weapon:
Raph: Sai; Leonardo: Sword; Donatello: Bo and Michellangelo: Nunchakus , but Leonardo and Michelangelo seem to have changed weapons.

This series is not complete. Apart from the four turtles, there were more characters made: A second version of the turtles in “Mutant Military” outfits, plus Bebop, Rocksteady, Shredder and Splinter.

These “Mutant Military” figures were released in 1991, and with that we can date Yolanda series from 1991 on.

Yolanda made turtles' figures in at least 2 different sizes. The ones I am showing here are the bigger ones. In the picture below, I offer a size comparison between the big and the small ones. The smaller size series also included many figures, at least, 8. These will be shown in future entries.

FACTS AND FIGURES:
  • Name: LEONARDO, RAPHAEL, DONATELLO and MICHELANGELO
  • Toy Line: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT)
  • Year: 1991
  • Company: Yolanda (Spain)
  • Size of the figure: Around 8 cm.

#294 POLISTIL – HONDA COUPÉ Z MG-25 (1974)

POLISTIL'S MG SERIES

This funny cars made by Polistil were released in two waves in the years 1974 and 1976. The first wave included metallic chassis and the cars were numbered MG-20 to MG-25 (6 models), while the second wave had plastic chassis and references between MG-26 and MG-37 (12 models).

First wave:

  • Mini Minor MG20
  • Fiat 500 MG21
  • Citroen 2cv MG22
  • VW Coccinelle MG23
  • Fiat 127 MG24
  • Honda Z MG25

Second wave:

  • Mercedes Benz 350/450 MG26
  • Alfasud MG27
  • VW Porsche MG28
  • NSU Prinz MG29
  • Ford Capri MG30
  • Rolls Royce MG31
  • Citroen DS21 MG32
  • Fiat 126 MG33
  • Renault 5 MG34
  • A112 MG35
  • Jaguar E MG36
  • Citroen Ami8 MG37

Due to their small size, the cars were sold in square boxes. The boxes in the first series included a drawing of the car with the name of the car in very nice fonts, different for each model. Second series’ boxes were less interesting, since they depicted a picture of the actual toy, and the texts were written for all cars with the same font.

Cars are made of three pieces, chassis, body and windshields. The interior is directly casted in the chassis (no separate piece) and the axles are fixed on the lower part of the chassis (outside), instead of inside.

Note the wheels of these models, because, to my knowledge, they’re exclusive from this series. To increase the “toon” impression, rear wheels are bigger than front wheels in every model.

Unless anybody says the opposite, each model was released in only one colour, and they are pretty rare collectables, since they were made in short releases, and apparently, without much success.

I think I own one more model, as soon as I find it, I will update this entry. I wish I had all 18 models, because the collection is something very rare in the die-cast history, and they’re quite fancy. This “toon-ing” is very popular in the transforming robots world, whose figures are called “super deformed”.

As a curious fact, I'd like to mention that this Polistil series was "copied" for Kinder Surprise by the early 80s. I have taken the following picture from the catalogue book I showed in entry #181, and after that, I include two more pictures of one toy from the famous italian chocolate egg.

FACTS AND FIGURES
  • Name: HONDA COUPÉ Z (MG-25)
  • Scale: 1:64
  • Year: 1974
  • Company: Polistil (Italy)
  • Size: approx. approx. 4-5 cm

#293 PILEN/ ARTEC – SEAT 600 and SEAT 131E (Refs. M-335 and M-521) (1974 and 1975)

PILEN AND ARTEC

These two cars are special for me, as I already explained in entries #226 (Seat 600) and  #207 (Seat 131). Curiously, these two models have the exact colours of the cars I knew as a kid.

Being Pilen a Spanish company, it manufactured many reproductions of Seat models in 1:43, some of them in several colours and with different decals. It is common for Pilen, that one single model in two different decorations has two different reference numbers.

Seat models by Pilen in 1:43: 600, 1600, 124, 127, 131 and 1200.
Seat models by Pilen in 1:64: 131 “familiar” and Ritmo.

SEAT 600 (M-335) from 1974:

It is interesting to note, that the 1:43 series was a nice mixture of sport cars, prototypes and “normal” cars you could see on the streets, with several decorations each. Specially eye-catching are the “rally” versions, with colourful decals.

On the other side, the 1:64 series was based almost exclusively in ordinary cars, like Seat, Ford or Peugeot, with very few sport or prototype vehicles. A notable exception is this series of F1 that came later (based on Polistil models).

SEAT 131E (M-521) from 1975:

A last comment on these car models is that, as you can see in the pictures, the Seat 600 comes in a jewel box with a black base instead of the “classic” orange one. This is so, because the model is not the original one from 1974, but a later reedition from the late 80s. Pilen ceased its production in 1983, but only 5 years later, in 1988, the company was reborn with the new name Artec. In the first catalogues from Artec, there is still place for the Pilen logo, meaning that both companies are really the same one, or at least, that Artec is the successor of Pilen.

Artec made many of the older Pilen models, and sold them in black plastic cases, instead of the orange ones. The black colour was associated to the idea of high quality and luxe, because Artec’s 1:43 series was renamed “Serie Oro” (“Gold Series”). Some models were also released as “Serie Oro Luxe”. (“Gold Series DeLuxe”).

The first of these two was sold in jewel cases like the ones you’re watching here, and often included a golden sticker with the name of the series “serie Oro”. The name of the car also appeared in one long sticker applied in the black part of the box. Together with the reference number and ARTEC.
The "Serie Oro Luxe" was sold in black cardboard boxes with windows decorated with golden stripes and golden logos.

After this series, quality decreased very notably, as we will see some other time.

Despite the black base, logo on sticker, and so on, Pilen logo appears on the box of the Seat 600.
